How Can 5G Make a Difference in the Industry?
5G networks will finally be activated in Türkiye with the frequency tender to be held in 2023. Currently, within the scope of special projects such as İstanbul Airport and the 5G@endtech program, 5G networks are also very limited in Turkey. So where does 4G fall short? In which areas will 5G be a technology that will make a difference?
Unlike the GSM technology that preceded the 5G technology itself, it has the capability for the first time to chains of parts of the chain. 3 major difference structures compared to previous GSM technologies:
1) Much higher speed: While in theory the maximum achievable speed in 4G is 300Mbps, in 5G it reaches 30Gbps. This means that much larger data exchange is possible.
2) Much lower latency: 15-50ms latency for 4G drops to 1-10ms for 5G. This means getting the data of the reflex time.
3) Much higher capacity: 2000 device connections per square kilometer possible in 4G, increasing to 1 million in 5G. This means an end to connection interruptions caused by the use of bandwidth in places where there are too many devices communicating via GSM.
It also needs to be clarified exactly how all these skills will be of benefit. If the results of these features are not clearly expressed in real life, it will be difficult to demand the transition from 4G to 5G, where these features can only be seen as a luxury investment, more or less responsive to all the features of many consoles.
The above outline of 5G technology in this direction paves the way for some that were previously groundbreaking in theory but could not be taken for granted due to the deployment of the sprawling community. The apps shown below don't enjoy the same results from any of 5G's 3 benefits, but they rely heavily on those benefits. It is expressed in the drawing that which operation relies on which advantage and to what extent. For example, while high acquisition speed is essential for business and cloud protection of big data, high capacity becomes important when it comes to the consumption of a large number of electronic devices in a small area such as smart cities.
When they see human life and traffic patterns, such as autonomous vehicles, very low latency is critical so that they can be implemented in a healthy way. In autonomous vehicle applications, the reflex of the data from the numerous sensors in the vehicles takes place at the end, and the use of the bandwidth that can be created by the inadequacy of many devices must be strictly prevented.
When it comes to autonomous manufacturing, the main lines of machines are usually large enough to not need the speeds made possible by 5G. On the other hand, low response times and processor communication between a large number of devices will be important in these devices, which have become completely independent of human intervention, such as dark factories.
When evaluating the benefits of 5G, it is clear that it promises to make an "industrial" difference that will improve the quality of life by directing these advantages, not through the electronic devices used by consumers.
While the 5G applications in the world continue rapidly, the areas with limited expenditure above in Turkey have been overhauled with the work of the first examples of 5G applications, industrial 5G router hardware of Robustel and the expert engineer team of GSL. In order to witness what kind of users use 5G in the industry, it is possible to reach 5G by Vodafone Business and visit MEXT, the technology center whose 5G applications were purchased in cooperation with GSL.
We talked about the fact that 5G will open new doors in the industry, making the previously impossible possible with its capabilities. So, what are the concrete applications that we can take advantage of the features of 5G and that we can deal with with the technology available in Turkey? Let's explain with flowers from different systems spreading with Robustel R5020 and EG5120 series 5G routers, which are used in 5G applications all over the world.
5G Application Examples
Robot Remote Control Application
These robots, which can be used in dark factory conditions, in places where human access is difficult, in environments harmful to human health, and even in search and rescue, can move at the speed of wired connection and human reflexes thanks to 5G. Inspection of industrial facilities or areas with hazardous environmental conditions can be carried out remotely with these robots. Spot robot can read analog measurement values such as pressure, current, temperature, and can detect hot spots or dangers in industrial facilities, water and steam leak detection with thermal cameras. It can detect the need for repair while helping to create a digital twin with laser scanning.
Remote Robot Arm Control Application
Remote robot arm control, which can break new ground in many fields, especially in health, takes advantage of the low latency and high speed advantages of 5G technology. Remote robot arm control can lead to many applications not only in remote surgeries, but also in production facilities at points that may affect human health and in the defense sector. The fact that Robustel R5020 supports many industrial protocols, including Modbus, provides a great advantage for such applications.
Intelligent CNC Machine Application with AMR
Establishing a special "Private LTE/5G" infrastructure in areas such as factories, shipyards and mines, where general mobile networks are insufficient for various reasons today, provides a great advantage for critical communication within such facilities. At the beginning of the applications where the use of 5G is critical in such facilities is the AMR/AGV, which are highly maneuverable mobile robots used in the handling of many different materials. Robots and machines in the production area can connect with AMR or AGVs via 5G. In these connections, there is no bandwidth shortage or response time delay thanks to 5G, thus making it easier to respond to any emergency or problem on the line.
AS/RS Automated Storage System Application
In these systems, storage activities are completely controlled by computers. Operations such as storing, arranging, unloading, and even order picking on shelves are managed by computers. In this application, high-speed/instant communication is provided with ERP systems thanks to the 5G integration of the AS/RS system. In addition, the system allows the use of high-resolution cameras to communicate with 5G and to separate certain packages. Thus, for example, orders or requests can be processed much more quickly.
Assembly Line Emergency Stop Application
An assembly line usually consists of manual and automated processes. For this reason, high safety requirements occur during material delivery and material pickup in some assembly areas. An important area where 5G can provide an advantage in occupational safety optimization is these assembly lines. In an assembly line emergency stop application, the low latency provided by 5G ensures that the information received from motion sensors is sent without delay, and the assembly line can be stopped instantly in case of any danger.
CNC Machine Remote Monitoring and Analysis System
In industrial facilities, dark or digital factories, the data received from CNC machines, sensors and all kinds of IEDs must be remotely monitored and analyzed and controlled. For this reason, this data must be transferred to the cloud in a secure and lossless manner over 5G and processed with the right software. Such remote monitoring and analysis applications take advantage of the low latency, high speed and high bandwidth benefits of 5G. Robustel's 5G router models ensure secure and lossless data transfer thanks to their industrial design and stable 5G connections.
Occupational Safety and Emergency Application
Image processing technologies can be used in production facilities so that the system can give a warning in case of emergency. Here, both low latency and wide bandwidth are needed from the advantages of 5G technology. In these applications, Robustel industrial 5G routers offer stable cellular connectivity and Gigabit ports to make the most of the benefits of 5G. In addition, with 5G communication, it is possible to take timely measures against the dangers that may occur in the robot cells in the production facilities.
When implementing industrial 5G applications such as these, the greatest need is to use field-tested and approved communication equipment and to find a reliable solution partner with an expert team that has already commissioned similar applications. As GSL Engineering, we are ready to guide your transition to 5G with our expert team that has deployed a wide variety of 5G applications and our 5G router solutions used in a wide variety of applications all over the world.
